Providence Day School PDS JUNIOR SQUASH PROGRAM

Charlotte Squash Club, 5660-C International Drive, Charlotte — Overlooking the lake

Squash is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing sports! Named by Forbes magazine as the top-ranked healthiest sport, squash is a great cardio workout that also provides ideal training for other sports. A lifetime, and all-year round sport, squash is a fun activity the whole family can participate in. A junior squash program run by the state’s highest-ranked Coach will be held at Charlotte Squash Club for PDS students. Many top colleges place a strong emphasis on their squash programs and often consider applicants who play squash.

Equipment: All students will need a squash racquet and goggles, which they can purchase on the first day of class. The cost of equipment is estimated at $147 (including tax).

Waiver: All students need to complete the waiver (can pick one up at the club also) by the first day of class.

Please note that in addition to, or in lieu of, the fall, winter and spring term classes listed above, students can attend individual or small group private lessons. Please contact Coach Connie at conniesquash@gmail.com  (cell: 301-807-9905) with any questions regarding lessons or any other matter related to the Charlotte Squash Club.

Transportation: The Charlotte Squash Club is located at 705C International Drive Charlotte (Providence square), Charlotte, NC 28270. We currently do not have school bus transportation, and are requesting older students who have a license, and parents to help coordinate and work on carpool arrangements. Students need to be picked up at the squash club after class.

Round Robins: There will be round robins and match plays, which will likely occur every Friday or every other Friday. There is a drop-in fee of $10 to play; CSC members are free.

Tournaments: Sameer is coordinating with Connie on sharing the US Squash Tournament schedule as tournaments become available. Most of these tournaments require travel as they are out of state. Coach B, along with Connie, will be able to guide each student in their ranking level and make a joint decision in whether a student or team of students can register and participate in a tournament.

We will give you as much notice as we can for these events.

Q&A some common questions and answers

  1. What will the classes involve? The program will emphasize squash technique and strategy, fitness, & sportsmanship. Each class will include a technical component, drills and games.
  2. Is squash bad for my child’s tennis game? No. Many #1 tennis players in the world use squash to improve their tennis game, including Federer and Nadal.
  3. Can squash help with college admission? Possibly. Squash is played at all the Ivy Leagues and many other schools (see CSA college squash association for listings). There are so few students who play squash when compared with other sports (e.g., soccer and tennis) that it is relatively easier to achieve an impressive record with squash.
  4. Can my child get more time on the court to practice and play outside of clinic hours? Yes. Your child or family can become members of Charlotte Squash Club and will receive a 20% discount on membership fees.
  5. Is it ok if my child has never played? Yes. Many students are beginners. We can also organize a lesson or two before their first day, if desired.

If traditional sports do not work for your child, try squash. It’s a team and individual racquet sport. It favors those who enjoy strategy, as much as those who are athletic.
